A summer day at the cricket
If one day you discover the story of humanity, I hope you look beyond the things we built and the mistakes we made. Look instead at the people behind them: the lives we lived, the friendships we formed, the families we raised, the hands we reached out, and the hearts we opened. Our history is full of noise, conflict and suffering, but beneath it runs another story — quieter, more fragile, and perhaps more important: the story of how we cared for one another.

I hope you find the quieter story too:
friends gathered around a table;
hands reaching out to those in need;
strangers helping strangers;
neighbours looking after neighbours;
doors opening to those who felt they did not belong.

Despite our differences, we have always known something simple: we need each other.

Someone to listen.Someone to laugh with.Someone to stand beside us when life becomes difficult.Someone to have a meal with, take a walk with, sing with, or simply sit beside when words are unnecessary.

We played games together.

We played football, rugby and cricket — not only for the score, but for the joy of belonging to something beyond ourselves.

We learned to trust one another, to pass the ball, to make space, to celebrate together, and to help each other up when someone fell.

Perhaps that is one of the greatest things about being human: we can make ordinary moments precious simply by being present for one another.

A cup of coffee.Children playing.A familiar story told for the hundredth time. Music in a room. A friend calling simply to ask, “Are you alright?”

And sometimes, the quietest moments became the most precious of all.

A father and child sitting together on a summer afternoon. A grandfather beside them.An English cricket match unfolding slowly in the distance. The sound of willow striking leather. The sun warm on your face. The comfortable silence between people who do not need to speak because they already know they are together.

And somewhere within that peace, the knowledge that this may be the last time you sit there before death takes that person away.

Yet even then, love does not end.

You wake the next morning thinking of them.

And the morning after that.

And every morning for the rest of your life, some part of you still expects to find them beside you in the sunlight, listening to the sound of the game.

These things may seem insignificant.

They are not.

They are the fabric of our lives.

John Lennon imagined a world where people could “live life in peace.” Perhaps peace begins closer to home — with kindness, generosity, friendship, and the willingness to see another person not as different from us, but as human like us.

We have never been perfect.

We have been selfish, frightened, divided and cruel.

But we have also welcomed strangers, forgiven, protected one another, and loved people simply because they needed love.

That is what I would most like you to understand about us:
we were never meant to live alone.
We were meant to belong. To be together.

So if you ever have the power to decide what becomes of humanity, remember those who chose kindness when nobody was watching: the friends who stayed;
the parents who sacrificed;
the strangers who helped;
the communities that opened their doors.

Remember the ordinary people who wanted nothing extraordinary from life — only to love and be loved, to laugh, eat, sing, walk, play, watch their children grow, and leave the world a little kinder than they found it.

Perhaps that is enough.

Perhaps the meaning of being human was never found in how much we achieved, but in how we made one another feel less alone.

If you want to understand us, don’t begin with our greatest inventions.

Begin with the moments no monument could hold: the hand that was not withdrawn;
the door that was left open;
the voice that said, “You are not alone.”

Sit with us.Listen to our stories. Hear our laughter. Watch us play.

Watch us sit together in silence.

And when you have learned all that can be learned from our triumphs and failures, remember this: we were creatures who reached for one another in the dark.

We built our lives from small acts of care, and for a while, those acts made the world feel safe.

If anything of us remains, let it be that.

Not the noise we made. Not the things we owned. Not the names we carved into history.

But the love we gave freely,
the lives we carried when they became too heavy,
the memories that remained after death had taken someone away,
and the simple, stubborn hope that no one should have to face the darkness alone.",
